Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH)

Feodor Lynen-Feodor Lynen Research Fellowship for Post-Docs

Funds highly qualified German early stage researchers with a doctorate for a research stay abroad. They must have completed their doctorate in the last four years.


Feodor Lynen Research Fellowships for Experienced Researchers

Funds highly qualified experienced German researchers for a research stay abroad. They must have completed their doctorate less than twelve years ago.


Georg Foster Research Fellowship for Postdocs

Funds highly qualified early stage researchers who come from developing and threshold countries and want to carry out a research project of their choice in Germany. They must have completed their doctorate in the last four years.


Humboldt Research Fellowship

Funds highly qualified early stage researchers from abroad for a long-term research stay in Germany. Researchers of all nationalities and disciplines may apply and must have completed their doctorate in the last four years.

Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds

PhD Scholarships

Funds highly qualified early stage researchers who want to carry out an ambitious PhD project for ca. 3 years in the area of biomedicine in an internationally renown laboratory (age limit 27 yrs).


MD Scholarships

Medical students who study in Germany and have obtained good grades on the intermediate exam (Physikum) and during the subsequent studies can pursue an MD project on basic biomedical research at a variety of locations (age limit 24 yrs).

The ESC awards fellowships to young cardiologists (under 36 yrs. of age) for a training or research stay in another ESC state.

HFSP Career Development Award

International Agency for Research on Cancer

Visiting Scientist Award for Senior Scientists

This award offers Senior Scientists the possibility of a six- to twelve-months research stay within the International Agency for Reserach on Cancer.

IBRO Research Fellowship

IBRO Travel Grant

Supports neurologists who want to travel to an international neurological congress to present their research results.


SfN/IBRO Return Home Fellowships

Enables applicants from less developed countries (WHO List) to receive travel funds (age limit 35 yrs.)

Joint Japan/ World Bank Graduate Scholarship Programme

Enables researchers from eligible World Bank - Member Countries to complete a Masters Programme at renown universities.

JSPSJapan Society for the Promotion of Science

German doctoral candidates and post-docs in Japan

Funding for doctoral Students

The Academic Foundation is the largest German organisation sponsoring the academically gifted. These researchers must have been suggested by others in order to be admitted. They can only apply in person in the case of a funding programme for a certain study abroad.
